“Isla Coco” begins with a narrative structure created by the collages of Mario Bizzarri, co-author of the project. These are delicate, almost abstract images, where realism is barely hinted at amidst the textures of the humble materials used, typical of the artist’s style. They tell the story of a shipwreck, specifically the exploration of the island on which the surviving castaway lands.
The succession of images describes the discovery of the island and the gradual evolution of the exploration, which from exploration of the territory becomes increasingly internalized until it becomes an exploration of the unconscious. Reality gradually merges with the castaway’s inner experience until it transforms into a fantastical journey into the purest imagination. Ultimately, the return to reality will reveal that the island and the unconscious, interacting, have undergone a transformation, making them part of a single organic whole.

This narrative structure, in which the description of events is often metaphorical, is the framework within which image and sound create a multiplicity of shifting situations, both concrete and abstract. The musical concept of the work considers both instrumental sounds and concrete ambient sounds. These two categories are often superimposed to the point of losing all recognizability: the instrumental sound then creates the characteristics of a fantastical environment.
The images are assembled in a temporal sequence using multivision, where photographic processing allows for the same transitions that operate in the musical context with very slow cross-fades. The dancer’s movement produces a three-dimensional expansion of the play of transformations, which the costumes emphasize by echoing the textures of the images.
